I reckon I'll mock up a headpiece out of some pine or such, and give it a whirl before digging into the real thing.
Best way to drill the the tuner holes? The tuners are individual, not 3-on-a-plate.

I use a doweling jig that clamps on the side of the headpiece to do that.

I did not have a jig. I used a level and a drill press with a vice.

This is how you do it.

Drill your tuner holes in the side first, then use a template and a drill rod cut at 45 degrees and sharpened to follow the template and cut your slots....you go down about 1/8" at the most per pass.
