I think you're right, Herman. I posted a paper here some time ago that proved scientifically that wider grain has nothing to do with stiffness; in fact, exhaustive testing proved that in many cases a mix of narrow and wide grains proved to be stiffer than the very close-grained wood - the paper focused on spruces.
