Walnut dread with German spruce top.

Post by Kenny Wiebusch » Thu Jun 18, 2020 2:16 pm

Thought I would share my latest. I took the pattern from my D28 but I am kind of over the square shoulders. I rounded them off and it ends up looking like a j45. How about that. I had reservations about the walnut after thickness sanding due to a lack of tap tone. When I put braces on it was much better. It is a very pretty wood and great to work. I have koa binding and simple purfling. I made a neck from flat sawn walnut that I had on hand. Laminated two pieces into quarter sawn. No scarf joint this time. The fingerboard is Malaysian blackwood and I really enjoyed working with it. I got it too narrow so I bound it with bubinga. A bit more work but worth it. The walnut neck seems a bit heavy but looks great. I also went with a bolt on neck. For top bracing I am trying the Bourgeois style where only the bass side x brace is scalloped. It was a pretty flexible top. I am trying to decide on french polish or lacquer for finish. I has some shellac on it for now.
Thanks for looking!

The guitar looks great I love all of the details and the wood selection. I would probably go with lacquer as that is what is expected on a dread, but I FP a lot of instruments and am happy with the results.

Good lookibg indeed. I love rounded shapes, so well done on that part. Walnut is a strange wood to me. The rough wood always sounds dull (but looks great). In a finished guitar it works fantastic. Surprise us.
