When dry sanding I sand with the grain, when wet sanding I just go all over the place. Others may do differently.

BTW: I never sand between nitro coats anymore. I did before, but it turned out, it has no use at all. The layers just melt into each other. With or without sanding. I only use a dust sticking cloth before spaying.

My reasoning for sanding between coats is to learn when to stop applying finish. At my experience level, I'd be liable to put on more finish than is needed, and while the finish is leveled after applying finish is done, I might have built up an unnecessary thickness of finish. At least when I'm sanding between applications, I know when to stop building up finish.

Again, this is what's worked for me.

I am with Peter on this. I like to level sand starting each day. When I can successfully level sand, I will apply a few more coats on the level sanded instrument and let it cure properly. With nitro one can add enough coats so that one can be sure the finish can be leveled after curing, but for me I would end up with a thicker finish than I want.
