Pore filled OO-14

I pore filled my OO-14 (Wormy Bearclaw). I used Hood pore filler, I had to apply 7 coats to fill in those craters in that Oak, I sanded back to bare wood between each coat excapt the last coat, then just a light sand with 180 grit carefully so as not to sand through to bare wood. Next is the neck but I have some prep work to do before I start to pore fill.

Hey David,
I am in process on my latest OM. I'm also using the Hoods, and I went by the directions, two coats maximum, don't sand it away. It did not fill the pores on Walnut in two applications. I started spraying lacquer and it is building and beginning to fill. I think what you did makes more sense, but what a waist of product, huh! I still have 2/3 of a can, but I may on the next one go to a more traditional way to fill pores. I wasn't impressed with this stuff.

I am sure the Hood product is not for every body -- did you contact the manufacture? I use two very heavy wet coats on Rosewood and I do sand back both coats but I do not remove the coating completely back to bare wood I think that is the idea -- other wise you'll have indentions at every pore. The number of coats is a clarity issue -- two coats, I guess is deemed to be safe. Funny of the clear fillers (Target etc.) I have had the best experience with Hood -- go figure?

Did you guys spray or brush the Hood Quick Dry Pore Filler?

Dave B. this product dries very, very fast! I believe it can generally be compared to Chrystalac, Stew Mac clear, and Target High Solids. Those other products however being water borne can introduce a new set of problems -- they are grain raising and can, in fact cause (I've experienced it) warping of the thin back and sides. For this reason alone I no longer use any of the water borne finishing products.

I tried brushing the first coat without thinning...that didn't go well, drys so fast.
The second coat I thinned about 10% and sprayed. This went quite well and went on pretty thick. When I use it again I will spray only.
However, I didn't see how it could totally fill the pores. It is heavier/thicker than just lacquer, but I didn't see it filling and leveling out.

I like the fact that it is clear, and that it is lacquer based...completely compatible with nitro. I have not given up on it totally.
