Mega Mold side perpendicularity

Post by peter havriluk » Wed Mar 14, 2018 6:03 pm

My MegaMold (one that Ken sold me last year) doesn't have an innate ability to keep the sides perpendicular to the surface, I think. I've only used it once, and it seems to me as if the spreaders, being located at the bottom of the mold, can't put pressure on the center of the sides, so that the sides will be spread apart evenly, top to bottom. The mold pushed the sides into the uprights just fine close to the bottom, but the sides tended to bow inwards when left to their own devices.

Has anyone else encountered this, and if so, did they devise a workaround?

Thanks very much.

I raise the spreaders up using mdf spacers to get them more in the middle of the sides.
I've also used spreaders made from turnbuckles if I have a particularly problematic area, such as a cutaway that I'm concerned about.
The mm is a great tool. Tim Benware may have some ideas too.

Dave, thanks. I figured that would be a solution of some sort. I did that but I had no imagination if there was something better hidden in plain sight. Sometimes Ken the salesman told Ken the engineer to go do something else for a while, I think. Still, the mold's flexibility amazes. Tonight I used it to profile the back and set the neck angle on the top. Both those tasks would involve a whole lot more tooling if the mold itself wasn't part of a system. I'll adapt myself and make adaptations over time. I'm very pleased.
