Nut depth

Post by Dave Bagwill » Fri Sep 15, 2017 4:03 pm

You will see the pic attached, if I remember to attach it; it comes from the KMG 'manual' online.

I can't tell from the angle of the shot, but it looks like the bottom of the nut is a tad below the bottom of the fretboard - I think it's just the angle, but my question is - would it make any difference if the nut is a 'tad' below the fb bottom?

A student went too far in cutting the neck slot, and I did the same thing myself once, and it was truly a PITA to shim it up, use wood filler, whatever - probably should have just chalked it up to experience and carried on?

What do you think, you thinkers?

New nut?

CA a shim to the nut and trim excess -- I've done this dozens of times.

So,if the notch for the nut is too deep, shim with mahogany or whatever the neck is made of?

Sure --- most agree its best to glue the shim to the nut, I suppose you could shim the slot but I'd think that would be mroe difficult.

Very important to have the bottom of the slot perfectly flat to assure proper sound transmission.

Any idea how Martin cuts that slot - is it with a fixture of some sort?
