In my truck, I settle for thump. Otherwise I like it clean too. One system uses bandpass subs that also serve as printer stands and work down to 20 Hz. The other has a Sunfire sub that reaches 18 Hz. Both use sealed enclosures to control the drivers, which typically controls excess motion from the driver better than ported.
Once you put in a new passive radiator, your enclosure will be much tighter (not quite as tight as a sealed box, though) and control the excursion of your driver much better. Basically, your cardboard/tape left a huge leak, not to mention messed with the original TS parameters something fierce.
But, you don't want a pure sealed box with this speaker. Clearly, the box volume and driver characteristics were selected to work with a passive radiator that moves (and moves some air in the process). Sealed boxes do not move.

Re: Help with an old subwoofer
I'm just checking with parts express to see if an installation kit comes with the speaker.
