Ok so I saw this guy on youtube, and decided to build something like it. I had a nice piece of curly maple for the back, and made double sides out of regular maple that was hanging around; glued and vacuum-pressed. I have a spruce top ready for bracing.
These are just the odd pix that I've snapped, because I was not sure whether to post this or not.
I used a 00 template for the leg side, and a mandola template for the mando side. I'm using a 25.4" scale neck, and have yet to make the 8-string bridge. I'll be stringing it with double strings (rather than octave sets such as a 12 string would use).
We shall see how it turns out; as always, it has been fun/challenging.

- The rims wanted to twist a bit, so I drilled a hole in the MM on the inside and inserted a post. Works well.

Re: 8 string 'newzouki'
Getting the lower bout braces glued on. I pre-shaped the braces to match a template I made for myself, a shape I can live with for just about any guitar. This is an 8-string (4 sets of two identical strings) but I'm using guitar style bracing and scale length because I want to tune down and have a guitar-like sound, not a bouzouki sound.
Start on the bridge tomorrow.
Start on the bridge tomorrow.

Great project Dave. How do you play that? Like a mandolin or banjo?

There's a video in the opening post - that's what I'm going for.
