I do all my fretting on the guitar from my very first guitar. I have not tried a press. I use a 5 lb soft dive weight when hammering the frets over the body. As Ken mentioned it seems you might not have enough hands; I have most of my left hand in the sound hole holding the dive weight and lifting the guitar off the table a bit with my thumb holding the fret in the slot. The right hand hammers. Even on classical guitars with flat fret boards I have slightly curved fret wire so that the first taps are only driving the ends of the frets in. Flat wire just rolls as the tang has contact across the entire slot. Once the ends are tapped in you can just work across the slot from one end. Only taps are required.
