Thinking about a guitar for my grandson

Post by Kevin in California » Tue May 03, 2016 7:11 pm

I have some nice Ambrosia maple and some streaked sinker redwood tops, thinking about making an OM for my oldest grandson.
How do you all think that combo might sound?

Color wise it sure would be an interesting contrast in that the B/S are more often dark and the top lighter. I wonder if the maple tone would fight the redwood tone or compliment it? Hard foe me to say because I'm not a real fan of maple for B/S (too bright for my tastes). Have you found any examples to listen too?

Haven't found one to listen too yet, but not totally not-done.
Here is a pic of a Taylor custom and some other Luthiers version, I also have found a high dollar classical with maple and redwood.

Neither appeal to my eye -- but certainly different.

The reverse of what we think of, light top over dark body, but it is growing on me.
I've started the guitar and will post some pics soon. I think my soon to be 11 year old grandson will like it because it is different.
