Planning every detail

Post by John J » Mon Apr 18, 2016 7:17 pm

Just a guestion about how you plan a build. Do you have all the details worked out before you start i.e. All wood choices, rosette, head plate, inlay etc ? Or do you let the guitar as it takes shape lead you in a direction?
Just curious. I'm definitely in the latter camp.

I have very specific plans in my mind's eyes and ears -- then have the fun of proper execution to achieve the goal.

For the most part, I pull together the woods before I start building. Although I have changed my mind after I have worked with wood a bit.

I usually have the wood choices not only planned out, but on hand before I start, but I have been known to change things like binding/purfling schemes, fret and tuner colors...
Sometimes once you start building your ideas will change.

In the past I had some disappointing expiriences with customers who changes their whishes too often. Since that time I always want the plans to be settled before starting building. I guess I'm am not that good in coping with indecisive people.

So far the only indecisive people I've had to work with is me. And I usually agree with myself. Mostly.
