OK so I have finished the thing. I would say I am 7/10 happy with it. It is patchier than I expected, and I got too much red in the center so it doesn't glow as well as it could. For a first attempt and with virtually no info it ain't too bad.
a few photos of the stages -
1st coat of yellow
1st coat of red
2nd coat of red
1st coat of black
3rd coat of black
This was what I was shooting for -
Not to everyones tastes I am sure, but a little blues guitar like this should have a bit of mojo about it I think. I will write up a tutorial of what I did incase anyone wants to try it. From my test pieces the tru oil will darken the colours a bit, and I think the patchy parts should look quite nice once polished up. Now gota leave it to dry, clean up the bindings, bridge mask, then oil away!

By Golly Oli, she looks fantastic. Great job on the burst, can't wait to hear it.
