Ken, yes indeed. That part I had in hand. Wood that disappears squaring the braces to quarter-sawn ain't waste, it's adjustment.

Has anyone tried splitting it out with a froe?

Sure, works fine -- if you have the materials and the patience, go for it but be ready for some surprises.
