Ears - how to make and install

I need to add some ears to a headstock - have not done it before, and could use some direction and hopefully a few pix.

How timely. I'm just getting read to do my first set as well. I was just going to match the grain as best as possible, joint the surfaces and glue the two additions to the sides of the headstock.

Perhaps, Tim - you could do a few pix of the process? Might be good to have them permanently on the Forum?

I usually cut a strip from the billet waste and match the grain and surface of the head-stock. The veneer side of the neck is surfaced. One edge of the strip is surfaced. Plastic packaging tape is placed on the bench top overhang. Clamp the neck to the bench at the head stock face down -- clamp the the ears to the head-stock with three 6" bar clamps, make sure to tap the ears down to the table top. Once dry only a light scraping is need to get rid of the glue residue.

I normally surface the back of the HS on a CNC -- but we do have a manual machine for that operation as well.
