This is one of the smartest outside the box ideas I've ever seen. So simple and minimal and cheap. You can make it any shape that is convenient - like for measuring top thickness on a closed guitar box - pre-mark the straight rod, and measure away. No it will not be as accurate as a $400 digital magnetic thingie. Heck, it's a great idea even if it doesn't work for geetars.

Well, okay, I made one of these earlier in the week. Not a difficult task BUT - It's useful in measurements no finer than about 1/16". Not useful for top gradation post box-closing.
Now IF it had a threaded rod that could fit through a threaded ferrule, it could work. Hmmm...
