Oiling the inside

Post by pressmanh » Tue Mar 13, 2012 5:57 pm

Hello everyone, need some help deciding on what to do.

My father had the idea of staining/oiling the inside of our acoustic (that we are about to close up) with some watco natural Danish oil/Finnish and I'm not sure if this would be a good thing or a bad thing. Obviously it would look nice but I'm not sure if it would turn into a dust trap or if it would warp the wood etc. any help and input would be greatly appreciated!

I believe the general consensus is that finishing the interior while not much of a help (acoustically) as long as the chemical dries hard it should not be a hindrance. At one time Alvarez Yari's all had lacquer finish on the inside, although made in Japan the ones from the early days were highly regarded. Some custom builders do an interior finish claiming more stability relative to humidity changes -- no documentation that I know of?

I don't think you're talking about the top as well, hopefully, just the sides and back...

I would be concerned...depending on the kind of finish you will ultimately use, as well as the kind of wood, Watco can have some deep penetration. I would be worried that, in some spots, it would penetrate to the outside, and possibly interfere with your main finish. Just a concern. If you really want to finish the inside, use the same finish as the outside.
So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.
