Headstock Art

Post by Dennis in Anola » Sun Oct 11, 2015 8:19 pm

My daughter hand-painted this hawk on Dave's 185 headstock. It is done with acrylic paint and still needs to be clear coated with Krylon clear spray fixative followed by many coats of nitro lacquer to seal in the artwork.

Your daughter is a very talented artist. I have a photo of a similar hawk hanging over the mantle. I would replace it with hers any day. Almost seems a shame to drill the tuner holes in that. Did you consider placement of the holes with position of the hawk? Can't wait to see the completed guitar.

Beautiful painting, looks like an American Kestral to me. Also known as a sparrow hawk, which is actually a falcon.

Dave wanted the hawk as large as possible so he decided on the following layout for my daughter to work from. Only the top two holes will be affected. It would be near impossible for my daughter to put that much detail into a smaller painting. I think the final result will be very impressive especially with the dark wood veneer.

Thanks for your comments everyone. Yes, it's a Kestrel and a very colorful one at that especially on the dark wood veneer.
