Re: Sticker shock
I'm not fond of their prices either. :-(
I originally bought their fret leveling file and small nut file because I didn't have anything big enough or small enough.
Sandpaper on a board would have worked for the leveling but I liked the mass. The nut file made great slots quickly.
My substitute riffler files worked for the larger slots, but it was slow and not as neat.
Time is my killer so I'll use StewMac when I don't want so spend time solving a problem they have already solved.

Re: Sticker shock
I have purchased tools from Stew Mac, but I have also had a couple of good scores on eBay for used tools. Stew Mac has double edged nut slotting files for $140 and the nut and saddle shaping files, $26.75 from StewMac for a total of $166.75 before shipping. I paid a little over one hundred for all of them shipped on eBay. The other luthier forums are good places to score used tools as well. I bought a radius dish from a guy getting out of the hobby for $50 shipped. I am always checking the classifieds for deals at the other forums.
And before anyone asks about the nut slotting files, I have yet to use them. I got them after I completed the last batch of guitars I made and have not gotten to the nut and saddle portion of any of my current builds.
