HD-28 Custom, # 20 (or was it #19?)

Post by Herman » Fri Aug 14, 2015 11:18 am

Ready. The HD28 for my, serious Neil Young fan, friend. He made a trip to the Adirondack mountains in the 80's and therefore he fancies here a Red Spruce top. His memory lane. I made a mistake and marked the headstock with "20". But in fact it is nr 19. Please don't tell. Over 100 years collectors will debate over the "missing nr 19". Ha!

But serious:
Adirondack top
EIR back/sides
Ebony fingerboard.
Wengé bridge
Plastic ABS binding (Neil had it, but I hate it)
Zpoxy filler under Clear laquer
JJB passive pickup
Rosette MOP in ebony

The guitar sounds a bit on the tight side with the strings on for a day (as expected). It will improve. I'll try to post some sounds in time.

BTW: About the finish. Sanding is up to 2000# and recently I have this 3 stages buffing fluids from 3M for real gloss. All by hand. Works great and here is how it looks:

Very nice work! Looks great!

I have to ask -- is it the camera angles or is the shape custom, it does not look like a standard Martin "D" in the pixs

I checked Ken. Your eye is correct. I copied the form from an other "D" guitar. Assuming it would be historical correct. Now you asked this, I layed my mold on the Martin plan I have. The shoulders and lower bout are the same, but the waist here is a bit more curved/smaller.
My compliments to your eyes. You got it right.
So it is even better, 'cause I'm not fond of the bold shapes of a "D". (I like 'm female).

It will probably slide around less when played sitting down.

Another great looking guitar. I love that rosette. I like the shape of your guitar better than a Martin D. I always have thought the Martin D looks stretched and out of proportion.
