Kerfed Lining, How small dare you?

The lining I use to work with is about 5,5mm (0.22 inch) thick at the top side. Now have some cheaper Sapele strips that are designed for classicals and are 4 mm (0.16 inch). They seem very tiny to me. I am in doubt to use them on J and D sized guitars. When I use herringbone purfling there is not much of top/sides glue area left.
Hmmm. Alleviating thoughts, guys?

careful routing for the herringbone. All of my kerfed linings are around than 5.5 mm even for classical guitars I would be where you are wondering if it is OK.

You have to factor the thickness of the top at the perimeter. You can also leave the purling channel a little shallow and plan to shave/sand the purf flush.

Yes Ken, thought of that way. But still 4mm makes me sleep less tight, so I think of dumping them.
