I have been finishing my contemporary classical guitar with Royal Lac shellac from Shellac Finishes. I am really happy with how it is going on. Here is a description I found on line Royal-Lac is a proprietary formulation formed by cross-linking shellac with carefully selected synthetic resins to form new polyester chains that combine the look and feel of shellac with the durability of synthetic finishes.. Also it can be buffed to a high shine. It comes as a 2 lb cut I have been using it as a 1 lb cut. It really builds nicely and stays level. My method is sort of half FP half padding. I use a proper muneca or fad so I can control how much I am applying but I am using almost all with the grain strokes and no oil. At some point I will level sand and buff it out.

This is after two days, no sanding.

Looking nice John. I started putting some shellac on my crossover last night. Just beginning to pore fill with sawdust, but getting a hint of how it will look.

Very nice John. I like the padding approach, which is what Brian Burns taught me - but using the shellac you are talking about would make it even easier. I may have to get some of that.

How are the fumes and smell of this lac?

To me it smells just like the alcohol. You can definitely smell it.

The guy who sells Royal Lac is very good to deal with too. He sent the wrong item in one of my orders and felt he had to do "penance" for his mistake, so he let me keep the wrong one and sent an extra of the right one. He is trustworthy, to say the least.

I agree, I buy all my shellac flake from him as well.
