Festool sander as a thickness sander?

Tony, if I remember correctly you have inexpensive low quality planes. It seems no matter how much you try and tune those things up they'll never work well (I know from personal experience). Try a veritas, lie Nielsen, vintage stanley bedrock and you'll see a huge improvement.

The best tool in the world is useless if you don't know how to properly set it up. And since I don't know how to properly set up a plane, I use them for certain purposes, like joining plates, for which they work spectacularly! For thicknessing wood, I use my drum sander. It might not be as sexy as using a plane, but it certainly requires less work on my part!
I really need to spend quality time with my planes to learn to properly set them up and use them before I drop big coin on a Veritas or Lie Nielsen plane.

If you really want to take it up a notch, check out Konrad Sauer's infill planes. I had the pleasure of using one of them at a Lee Valley store where he was teaching a seminar. Set you back about $3000, but, like many guitars, they are a work of art.

Yeah....those are purty and real expensive! I have been looking for a link to another guy who makes planes. His prices were about the same but his planes were very different looking. Beautiful stuff. If I ever find it, I will post. My $9.99 used Ace Hardware plane is in a different league.

I bought one from an ebay seller some time back, new old stock with the box and tools and manual and all that, for $35. Have not used it. Now it appears I can sell it and get that Lamborghini I've been lusting for! A cheer for free enterprise!! :-)
