I like that way of pining the sound hole binding. I saw a demonstration on how to get a good joint if one was not planning to cover the sound hole. Make the binding wider than top. Then cut a relatively long scarf joint while the ring is close to the correct diameter. Then during installation the binding could be pulled tight against the sound hole and pinned as Dave shows. The extra width described above allows some space to slide the ends of the scarf joint to achieve the perfect diameter. Then the excess on both sides are then planed or scrapped off.

That is a good method, which I've actually used when I cut a solid ring for the soundhole binding.

Since with this pinning method, I don't create the ring first - I just fit the two bindings in loosely then pin them to the hole and glue - I do avoid some work, but only because I'd planned on the fb extension covering the gap.

The first pic I showed of the pinning - the pic where I was using a central teflon circle and bending and pinning the binding to it - also works well, but of course once you glue the strips together that way, any imperfection will leave a noticeable gap around the hole. With my new method, the bindings conform to the hole exactly. Another way to skin that poor cat.

Getting ready to cut the maple veneer (.055" or 1/18" same thing). It comes in a big roll, that extends in the pic from one end of the workbench and off-camera to the left, underneath my swiveling tooltray.
I was going to do more but had an unfortunate run-in with a router bit that laid open a bit of my right palm. Bloody but will be ok. The router was not even plugged in!! Slipped out of its collar and sliced me on the way towards the floor. Dang!
