Neck Finish

Post by Tj Turner » Sun Nov 09, 2014 10:01 pm

Hey all...

I've been searching for a good neck finish, something super silky, and to me a matte finish is fine as well. Talking to a local woodworker, he showed me a finish he uses on some of his boxes and other projects. It feels perfect! I haven't tried it on a neck yet, but I thought I'd share and see if anyone had feedback.

Who's our oil finish expert?

Multiple coats of a couple Tung oil products:
1. Coat pure tung cut with orange oil.
2. 3 coats of Waterlox. Tung oil with ,linseed& phenolic resin.
3. A coat of Bioshield Hard oil. Which is a Tung oil preparation from Europe. 0000 steel wool between each coat.

Thoughts?

A great neck finish can be had with a small bottle of Tru-Oil (gunshops, Big R, Walmart - call ahead), put on in thin coats. Gives a great feel to the neck and the wood just loves it .

Thanks Dave...

I tried tru-oil on my last build, and while I liked the finish, it just wasn't slippery enough. Maybe I wasn't patient with it, and applied it too thick. The finish my friend had on some of his projects was amazing...but perhaps that was because he used thinner coats.

I'll try thinner!

Thanks,

Tj

If you do try it again, thin coats thin coats thin coats. If you try one of the other options you listed, let us know how it goes.

What's your application technique? I think I remember your videos of doing it on the body, was it just a simple paper towel, or something more complex like a FP pad?

Yeah, a simple paper towel, though a few guys here use paper coffee filters to good effect. I wipe it on, then wipe it off and wait till dry - depending on conditions, an hour give or take, then repeat.

I never would have thought of coffee filters!
