Japanese hand planes

Post by Daniel P » Tue Nov 04, 2014 5:38 pm

Are any of you very well versed in Japanese hand planes?

I'm thinking about finding one to try for thinning tops and backs, and it has been recommended that I look into a 寸六(sun-roku) 65mm size kanna. But I know nothing about blade makers etc. Used would be ideal, but unlike with western planes, I don't even know where to start.

I don't know much about them, Dan, though a couple of guys have mentioned that the mujingfang brand is a good one. I may have a link, I'll take a look.

Yeah - here's the one I've heard is a very good plane:

I think Lee Valley sells the brand as well.

Don't know or have them, Daniel. But my expirience with Japanes tools is, that they never disappoint.
I use ordinairy Stanley planes. And with a right sharp edge they do a good job.
On the other hand: Those expensive planes with brass and gorgeous hardwood make me greedy.
