Is the headplate veneer a necessary structural component?

I do not think so but it is handy to hold the nut.

IMO it is not needed persé. On the other hand, I dropped my first LesPaul a few years ago and the headstock broke off. But the veneer held its place. That made it an easy repair. Almost invisable. So headplates +1.

Plus it covers the glueline on my head-scarfjoints.
Plus it looks better, but that was not the question.

Indeed it is --- notably on a neck that has been made from a full 1/4 sawn billet. Take a look at the grain in relationship to the pull of the strings -- next to perfect shear angle.
