This is not the same tool in my original post, but it is similar in design and can be used the same.

This one is a Lee Valley/Veritas product. http://www.leevalley.com/US/wood/Page.a ... 3314,69873

Thanks to KnightroExpress over on Luthier Talk for the tip.

Stephen Boone did a tutorial for making your own wood version of this tool for cutting rosette slots and sound holes.

And here's my version of it.

That's pretty cool, and similar to one I have plans for called the Stanley Doubtfire (?)

I'd still like to learn the source of the one in my OP. It's just a strong case of curiosity on my part. I have a set of LH spiral (downshear) end mills on the way. If I am not satisfied with the quality of cut they produce, I'll probably make one similar to yours or the one I have plans for.

The original photo I posted is a screen capture from the John Bogdanovich DVD set. I sent him an email and asked about the one he uses. He replied this morning that it is no longer available and gave me some advice on avoiding tearout when cutting the inner & outer rings. :)

Looks similar to the Lie Nielsen Steve Latta radius cutter.

Lmi has one close to that. lmii.com/products/tools-services/rout/shape/drill/rosette/circle-cutter You can use these tools and follow with a chisel to clean out the channel instead of a router.
