I've had luck with a crooked neck chisel, but a convex bottom plane would make the scalloped bracing much easier to work. For those of you using a mini-plane for brace carving / shaping / tuning what id you favorite so far?
I've seen everything from the expensive little Ibex planes from Stew-Mac, to homemade mini wooden instrument makers planes.
What's your tool of choice?

This is the best plane I've used so far for carving my braces. The little one there.

Mine is a handmade plane by Stephen Boone, it arrived as perfect as can be and the blade was surgically sharp.

I made my own too -- fun project but took more time than I thought it would, duh on me loaned them out and never got'em back. So the next time I need one or two I get the ones from Stephen -- I agree with Bob, ready to work seems like a good value and they look cool too! Kevin -- perhaps a niche for you?

Re: Favorite plane for brace carving?
thanks guys.
I have some O1 tool steel bar stock and a kiln for hardening and annealing, but those Boone planes look like a great deal when you consider how much goes into them.

easy smeasy, lemon squeezy!
I use chisel blades for mine, get an old chisel, regrind it (care don't loose the temper) cut it off and there you go.
I can make in in a couple of hours.
