KMG - OM-14 Kit #1

Post by Mike Gustin » Wed Sep 10, 2014 3:20 pm

I'm getting started on my first! An OM 14 fret kit from Ken. I've been reading and researching guitar building for 8 or 9 years. I'm coming in with very limited prior woodworking experience, but I'm thrilled to finally be starting on it.

Specs:
KMG OM kit
14 Fret
East Indian Rosewood B/S
Sitka Spruce top
Mahogany neck
Flamed Maple bindings.

Tail block being glued:

Neck Block in process (don't worry, many other clamps were used than what's in the pictured)... used Ken's method of using locator holes to ensure the centerline on the neck block:

Bought more clothespins and did the bottom all in one shot:

This is where I stand now. I'm feeling pretty good about my work so far, especially coming into it with very little fine woodworking experience.

Next up: Radiusing the back and maintaining the neck angle. Debating about getting some support veneers and doing a sound port... We'll see how confident I'm feeling later this week.

Thanks Dave! Been watching everyone's construction logs for months... nice to have my own now!

@Ken - For some reason, I can't respond to your private message (I think there's a restriction on newer accounts probably for spam reasons). I've resized the images. They looked fine on my computer, but my monitor is very high resolution, and I didn't think about anyone with a smaller resolution monitor. Let me know if this looks good. :)

Looks good to me, technical image wise, and construction wise.

Hi Mike. Yes welcome to the awesome hobby of building guitars. I imagine you will become addicted as many of us have.
Nice work thus far. Keep a going!

Well, I do see a mega mold there - excellent decision! - but that leads me to believe our new member has at least a few more builds in mind
Am I right Mike? :-)
What part of the country are you from, btw?
