It could be Box Elder, but I would guess it was dyed to get that red coloring.
I've dyed Maple burl with red dye before having it stabilized, and it looks alot like that.

I don't think it was dyed. I'm going to email the guy again. I need to know now!

Here it is scraped down and with a coat of shellac. Totally changes the look. I think my repairs came out OK but I could have done a better job. Anyway, here it is:

It is spalted box elder. Just got confirmation.
