any point in them? You get them on some old gibsons and i have a piece of mahogany big enough. opinions appreciated,

Maybe so it could look like plywood? Actually a 16" wide 1/4" sawn board is pretty rare these days, not sure how it could be cut in a normal small shop. -- I see no advantage, I like the look of book matched and three piece backs. $.02

board isnt quarter sawn but its a piece of a victorian wardrobe so should be pretty stable.

Oh -- not so rare, I can get wide slab/flat sawn Genuine Mahogany with only slight up tick in price. I guess if its the look you want why not?
