Don't get me wrong Jim - I liked the sound just fine but you've got to agree that the architecture of the instrument IS also interesting. :-) I've watched a few more youtube vids and I'm impressed.

Was it a difficult project? Do you like the kits from MusicMakers? I have a set of their 'renaissance' guitar plans but have not built one yet.

Well now, that Hurdy Gurdy has a sound reminiscent of a bag pipe.

I started with a couple of Musicmakers kits before tackling anything made from blueprints. Their blueprints are clearly written and are intended for amateur woodworkers as opposed to experienced luthiers. That means they spell out a lot of things in detail and include building tips that might be obvious to the more experienced builders. Since their blueprints build an instrument identical to what they sell in kit or completed form, they also include the assembly manual from the kit so one only need make the parts, then follow the build directions.

They're supposed to! It has two chanters (drones) tuned to D & G and two melody strings tuned to D an octave above the chanter D.
