Salvaging drum sander abrasive

Post by ken cierp » Wed May 07, 2014 10:08 am

Sooner or later if you own a drum sander you'll get a deep set, super hard, heat set resin ring on the drum abrasive. A standard "eraser" cleaner or even the super acrylic tool I show elsewhere will not remove this dreaded condition.

The abrasive strips on our 37" Super Max is about a mile long ($$$) so I had to come up with a way to salvage them. Here's what I do. I use the same chemical used to soak and clean wide sanding belts. It can be applied locally, with a brush or spray bottle. Problem is that it need to set a good long while to do its work, but it evaporates quickly. So I use a strip of polycarb plastic made from pop bottles to cover the area which prevent evaporation. I let this one set over night, then used a brass wire brush to knock of the residue -- touched up with a rubber cleaner. not pretty but works like new.

wow that stuff really works. I'll have to look for it and get some, I have that same problem, although I'm not using my drum sander as often as you do Ken

That's a great tip Ken. Thanks. I'll try my spray bottle resin cleaner on an old belt to see if I can get the same results.
I've "Ben-Had" again!

Well I just got my sander finished and sealed pretty tight. Used it on some EIR building a Uke for a little girl across the street. Everything is new on it for now. But I'll sure use it when needed.

I looked and I don't think that JE Moser product is available anymore.
This might be an alternative product.
