John - the toother only sets the ppi and the rake angle. The set is done with a saw set like a Somax - http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.a ... 43086&ap=1.
I've read that anything finer than 17ppi is really pushing the limits of hand sharpening and setting - would be cool to make a little 16 or 17ppi fret slot saw, you could easily customize the set to your liking.
A .020" plate with minimal set (total kerf of .023-.024") , punched for pull cutting might be just what you need.
If you're going to hand cut dovetails - you might as well...

What a great Idea.. I have some of my Grandfather's carpentry tools from the 1890's and a couple of things that belonged to HIS Father dating back to before the Civil War, as I recall the stories my Dad used to tell me, those tools including a "Gents Saw" were made somewhere in the 1820's.
I don't use them...I just admire them, if and when I can get them out of storage, I'll take some pics and post them. The one blade I know was made by a Black Smith along with a couple other tools.
They are a Treasure to me...as will your saw be, to someone along the way...I just love you idea!

The handle has been shaped and the first few coats of Tru-oil applied.
