Ken, once again, thanks for the advice. I thought that copying something I liked would be a workable idea, but I didn't have any idea if there was a generally-agreed-upon pattern to follow that I didn't know about. Hate to be in the dark when somebody else knows where the light switch is. Basis for my question is what-should-I-do when I have control of the situation. The guitar I'm terrorizing right now I built in Dave Nickols' shop, and I took his advice for everything, seeing as I was clueless. The more I'm learning to play, the more I'd like a bit more string spacing on a short(er) scale, hence the question.

The factories tend to put the "E"'s farther from the edges -- this of course may be a good choice if your playing style includes a lot of string bending, helps to prevent pulling the string off the FB. I prefer the little extra spacing the .10" provides especially with a standard 1 11/16" nut. $.02
