temporary finishing neck

Post by Jon Heimbruch » Wed Dec 18, 2013 5:55 am

I need to construct a neck fixture to handle the guitar body for finishing. I have a bolt on neck block. Dont Know if I should use plywood or a piece of pine, maybe hardwood? it has a three quarter inch mortise in the neck block. Have had a few ideas but would like to hear about any tried and true ideas. Thanks. Jon

Hello Jon - I use a 3/4" piece of solid oak (about 2' long) that has two insert nuts in the end which match the bolt holes in the neck block.
This isn't a great photo of the fixture, but it is showing the guitar body attached to it, and the other end is being held in my bench vise. Really simple, but just make sure that your insert nuts are installed properly (and glued for extra insurance). Since they are being screwed into end-grain wood, some extra care is required.

Thanks Dave D. Are the nuts glued to the handle or the bolts?

I just put a little bit of thick CA glue around them, in the handle.

Here's the KMG version -- one course 1/4-20 brace insert. As mention CA on the threads is a good idea.
