That is the old style Martin TR -- channel is usually deeper, backwards like that moves the pressure point farther away from the nut (even more when its push in so the cover fits flat) which of course reduces leverage a little.

So I should route a little deeper and put a strip on top or just route deep enough for the rod?

Just blue masking tape to seal the open side of the rod cover?

the other end extends 1 3/4" into the upper bout, is this ok or should I trim the whole rod?
