This method works fine with Abalone or Abalam but I want to use gold MOP and the breaks from trying to bend it into the curves are very visible and quite ugly, any suggestions?

Yeah -- white is a PITA, you can't break/crack it. Matter of fact I think the only way you can get a seamless look is to actually have more seams -- the way I would do it is use very short pieces and instead of a butt joints sand alternating angles and make "scarf" joints -- lots of work!
