Caulkin makes sense. Would love to see results of blind listening tests. Ken C has referenced some with respect to different levels of Martin high end models that are essentially the same, except for price. The results of such tests seem to have difficulty surfacing.
The Benedetto book shows a picture of a very impressive looking archtop he built from construction grade, slab cut lumber purchased at Home Depot, knots and all.

And lets not forget about Taylor's "Pallet Guitars" which even drew comments from the Martin higher ups indicating that they too knew/agreed its was craftsmanship and integrity of the construction that was most important.

Re: heretic's guide to alternative woods
My recent purchase of "alternative" wood - Bocote. Anyone on here used it? I have heard both good and bad about it but if the article is correct my superior luthiery skills will turn it into a thing of beauty (or not).

I can tell you are a little uneasy, Tim - look, here's what we'll do - I will ship you an old oak pallett, which Taylor guitar uses!! - and trade you for that troubling Bocote.
Glad to help.

If you pay the shipping on the pallet, I'll take you up on that deal:)Dave Bagwill wrote:I can tell you are a little uneasy, Tim - look, here's what we'll do - I will ship you an old oak pallett, which Taylor guitar uses!! - and trade you for that troubling Bocote.
