this being my first time I didn't think that my big plank of 1/4 sawn mahogany for the neck will should also yield some bracing so that is another option.

Mike --- as stated above Spanish Cedar/Cedrela is not suitable for bracing. Use Spruce or Mahogany. Yes vertical grain along the height is very important.
