Dread & OM Finished

Post by George » Sun Aug 11, 2013 3:09 pm

I finished these two around a month ago but just now got around to taking pictures.

I had never played a kit guitar before and I was very happy with the tone of both. They're both set-up with low action and play effortlessly. There are a few Greenhorn tracks on them but nothing that jumps out at you. The finish turned out very good especially on the OM. I now know that lacquer isn't as forgiving as paint so the next one will have more prep before spraying and should turn out better. I'm very happy with the finish on these considering they were my first attempt with stain and lacquer.

Congrats George. The rosette on the OM is especially outstanding.

After a couple of years the lacquer will shrink considerably. I bet many of what you perceive as "greenhorns" will not be visible to even you by then. To my eye, these look beautiful. Todd Cambio, who has made guitars for a living for a number of years, put a public complaint on his web site about the emphasis on "perfection" that has developed within contemporary instrument building. He has a point. No one values a 70 year old guitar UNLESS the finish is crazed, so why are we panicked by a ding or other "flaw" on a new instrument? After all, Willie Nelson greatly enlarged the sound hole of Trigger using the noble technique of clawing, right?

Be proud of what you made. They are nice.

Those are beautiful George. Great job.
I'm not a crazy for sunburst kind of guy, but I like that top on the dred. It is spruce, correct?

Looks great, George. Don't be hard on yourself about the finish. You'll get better on your next. The finish and its prep is one of the hardest parts of building, I think.
Play us a tune.
