how quartered is quartered enough?

Post by mike-p » Mon Aug 12, 2013 4:29 am

Bought some AA cedar, first time buying wood, sounded good so i got it. Sanded down the endgrain and it's less than vertical, should i get another?

Nothing bad will happen, one side of the sound-board may appear darker than the other under finish. But yes it does seem off vertical for normal "AA" material -- where did you buy it?

UK supplier called David Dyke, has a good reputation i think, i should have asked more questions about his rating system and looked at the piece more rather than just listening to it. It's going to have a clear finish so i may think about another piece.

I'm no expert, but it looks to be within the normal standards for quarter sawn, as I understand it. I've had spruce tops that ran like that toward the outer edges from LMI that were rated AA. They worked out fine and looked good when finished.

Cumpiano wrote that for him a top is ok when:
2/3 of the top is within 20 degrees off and
no part of the top is beyond 40 degrees off.
As I can see it from here, you're just in the green zone and according to that this top will end on a great guitar.

Miike-P, if that was the best sounding top that you considered, that MUST mean something.
