Planers will usually only work well with very straight grained woods. Anything with some figure will tend to have some chipout, which may be half as deep or more than the thickness of your plate. Tried it with Zebrawood, the stuff was still 1/4" thick, and went off like a gernade when the blade caught it.
So, my big brother was playing guitar and I figured I'd try it too.
