Porefill Slothead Neck

Post by darren » Sat Jan 28, 2012 5:05 pm

I'm ready to do my porefilling, but I'm a little concerned that it will be hard to level or sand the filler that gets in the slots. I'm not too concerned about filling the pores in the slots, but know that any porefiller that gets in them will be hard to clean out, and therefore make the slots 'splotchy'.

I'm using zpoxy, but I think the concern is valid regardless of the material.

Does anyone have any tricks to share?

Darren,

I have been using Z-Poxy on my last three and I always go over the whole guitar with a thinned coat of Z-Poxy and alcohol(thinned about 10-20%). This "wets" the wood and evens out any spots where you may have sanded through the z-poxy into bare wood. You can coat the insides of the slots with this thinned mixture to even out all of the wood too so it all looks the same and no splotches!
I use a cotton pad that I wad up like a muneca to apply the thinned coat. Make sure not to leave ridges with this thin coat or you will have to sand them down again!
Hope that helps!

Tony

I go into the slots with a tiny bit of zpoxy on my gloved finger wipe it in and wipe it out. It is enough to blend in the slot without the need for very much if any sanding. Tony's way using the thinned Zpoxy on a wad is great as well for the slot.
