Thanks guys, I can't believe how much I've learned, I'm even getting the hang of using a pencil and ruler accurately!

Tony, there won't be a slot, it will just butt up against the fretboard. Also, the neck and neck-to-headstock transition will be left pretty chunky so I'm not too worried, also I got SM short post tuners so I don't think i can fit a veneer without sanding down the headstock to compensate.

Damn, spruce is soft, just dropped the fretboard onto it and put a dink in with the corner, grr.

You can easily "steam" out a dent with a damp rag and a hot iron.

Thanks ken, i'll give that a go,

got my side dots in no problem, looking nice, got my frets on but I was too generous with the overhang and ran out of wire!

I'm thinking that while i'm waiting for wire etc I could think about sanding the body ready for whatever finish i'm going to go for. Anyone got a link/advice/instructions on how to sand down through the different grits? I know this is important and i don't really know where to start. thanks guys.
