The drill press at work was too big and no depth guage for the dot inlay holes. The guys suggested using a hand powered drill, very slowly and checking depth as i went, sounds like a plan but i don't have a hand drill, i think i can get one though.
can i begin fretting without having installed the dots or is it going to make it trickier?
Headstock was done by making a paper template, drawing round it and then sawing, chiseling and sandpapering. I've been messing with it for a while now and it still doesn't look fully symmetrical to me but I'm not sure i can do much better.

fairly pleased with my dots, took me ages, used a hand drill which actually worked very well as i could check the hole and then just drill a very little more until is was right. Think i had to scrape one of the dots a bit too much as it's a bit cloudy but overall it looks great to me! Tiny little side dots next. . .

You're doing an excellent job Mike. Keep it up and you will end up with a surprisingly nice guitar. Don't worry so much about sticking to convention. However, I would definitely use a HS veneer. Making a slot in the neck for the nut will weaken the thinnest part of the neck. A little drop and BAM!! Broken headstock. Not that any of us drop our guitars or have kids who knock them over...no. Not us.
