You can't use the finger-board because it (generally) will not be flat enough. We are trying to determine if the connection between the neck and body produces a straight flat surface along the neck finger-board plane and the sound-board FB extension area.

I had a read through that ken.
In my case I now think I have 2 separate issues. This morning I bolted on the neck to check for fit and while it slots in and bolts up perfectly I also find that when the neck is bolted in tight the top plane of the neck is pulled down into the mortise by about a 1/16th. First question is :Is it possible to enlarge the holes to allow the neck/ tenon be aligned perfectly with the top again and if so do i have to re fill the bottom of the holes, to have the bolts fitting tight again ? Pic enclosed

Would I be right in thinking I cant move forward with the other problem until I first get this sorted

Definately elongate those holes --this actually should have been done before you routed channels and installed the trim. The idea is to get the parts to fit before working on the bling.

Ok Enlarged the holes now and all tightens up perfectly and I have a level playing field around the joint of mortise/tenon.

But , the old problem remains. I set the un fretted fretboard on top of the neck where it should be--not glued obviously-- and lay the straight edge along it to reach where the bridge will eventually be.
Theres no gap whatsoever along the top where the fretboard extension sits--the fretboard sits perfectly flat. But , the straight edge hits the bridge about half way up its depth.Lets put it this way -if it was 1/8th higher it would be about right. I assume the frets would raise the straightedge slightly but even then I'm doubtful if it would be enough

So, is the only answer to tilt the heel back by removing material from it ?
That was definitely something I was hoping would not happen.

What does that mean?

Picture please -- straight edge on the fingerboard plane of the neck (no finger-board) along the full length and the finger-board extension area. You are getting the finger-board involved here too early.

My guess right now is that you do not have a straight line and there is no angle machined on the neck heel.
