Nicks and dinks?

Post by Ray Ussery » Tue Jul 02, 2013 12:27 pm

The edge of the area where the fingerboard attaches is almost of perfect width leaving no room for sanding out nicks and dinks on that edge of the neck without undercutting the fret board.
How can I deal with this? CA and wood dust? sand back the fingerboard with the neck? Seems like that would open a whole can of worms...if it (The neck) was a 1/16th wider than the fret board I could sand all of the nicks out and would be home free.

Thanks for any advice,
Ray

Rough Martin necks (kit quality) are wider then the finger board -- sounds like you have a mis-matched set?

Yeah...could be, the neck is 1 5/8" + or - 1/32 at the nut and the fret board is 1 11/16" + or - 1/32... it's about 1/32 off for the full length one way or the other...

Its perfectly acceptable to contour the edge of the fret-board so it blends into the neck. Actually some makers do that to get their normal appearance -- plenty of electrics are made that way.

The guy that supplies necks to LMII at one time, (all the necks were rather narrow) had that practice as part of his information blurb at his website.
