Which planes for brace tapering and scalloping?

Post by MarkAndrew1 » Sat Jun 29, 2013 9:20 pm

Can you guys recommend some finger and hand planes
to taper and scallop bracing. I was hoping to not break
the bank quite yet since this is my first build; so moderate
pricing would be the best choice at the moment.

Any help would be appreciated....

Hello, I purchased a set of Steven Boone handmade mini planes and they are great for shaping braces. They are really nice little planes and hold the edge well. Here is the link.

Mark, I made my own mini plane and you could too. Its made with a 1/2" chisel as the blade.
Let me find the pictures and I'll post. I use it to carve braces, works great. I also use it to take down the proud purfling and bindings top and back.

I'm not as talented as those that can make their own, I use this one:

I've heard a lot of good things about these and have wanted to order one for some time. Just one of those things that is not at the top of my list right now.

Just noticed a link was already provided. In the words of Homer Simpson, DOH!
